The Southwest Assembly, the first of six meetings in The American Assembly's ambitious multi-year Next Generation Project, took place at the James M. Collins Executive Education Center on October 19-21, 2006. The Assembly was co-sponsored with the John G. Tower Center for Political Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, led by executive director James Hollifield and associate director Lynne Novack.

Over two and a half days, the Next Generation Project Fellows' discussions laid the groundwork to assess the strengths and weakness of the current national and international institutional architecture.  Perhaps most importantly, fellows with a wide range of perspectives discussed these complex questions in a productive, respectful, and creative manner.
